The 2000s' high definition video demands once again calls for
a new solution. Enter the next generation Blu-ray Discs (or BD).
The lessons from history show that significant increases in capacity
and backwards compatibility are critical success factors for the
new format. With the advent of BD, the solution has arrived.
The emergent dominance of BD is on account of its substantial
25-50 GB capacity, allowing distribution of high definition video in
the highest quality and interactivity to create the ultimate users
experience. BD's unsurpassed capacity based on the same
physical form as the CD and DVD also allows the backward
compatibility that is essential for its success.
With its massive capacity, BDs can store up to 7 hours of the high
definition video without any compromise in video quality. Video
quality is maintained at the highest level because the capacity of
the BD allows video encoding at the highest bitrate removing the
need for video compression that adversely affects video quality.
Furthermore BD’s enormous capacity also allows for extra
special features and bonus material that complement the
high definition movie. Significantly expanding on traditional
DVD capabilities, BD incorporates new interactive features
thanks to its enormous capacity that afford content providers
and rights holders the opportunity to offer consumers a
truly incredible experience that can even be customized
via internet connections that allow premium content on the
BD to be unlocked. Furthermore, the interests of content
providers and rights holders are protected with the
increased security offered by BD’s superior Advanced Access
Content System (AACS).
